Thousands of Veterans to Rally in Washington on D-Day to Oppose Cuts to VA, Federal Workforce
WASHINGTON (April 8, 2025) — Thousands of American military veterans will gather June 6 on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial for the Unite for Veterans, Unite for America rally. The demonstration will protest the cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs and demand the preservation of veterans’ earned rights and benefits.
The event is being organized by members of the Unite for Veterans Coalition, a group of veteran advocates committed to protecting fellow service members, federal jobs, and the institutions that serve veterans.
Organizers say the rally aims to reinforce American values, defend veteran jobs (veterans make up roughly one-third of the federal workforce), protect the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and mobilize the veteran community to contact their elected representatives.
Key goals of the rally include:
Reinforcing American values: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction,” President Ronald Reagan once said. Rally organizers say today’s veterans have a responsibility to defend the Constitution, the rule of law, and long-standing American norms and principles.
Defending veteran jobs: Participants will protest the administration’s layoffs of veterans working across federal agencies, particularly the VA.
Protecting the Department of Veterans Affairs: Organizers oppose efforts to privatize or weaken the VA, calling for a strong and effective public system to care for veterans’ physical and mental health needs. “America should never outsource the responsibility to care for those who have borne the heaviest burdens of war,” organizers said.
“We’re calling on all veterans to stand with us on D-Day and protest these unjust attacks on our community,” said Will Attig, an Army veteran and organizer with the Unite for Veterans Coalition. “When we enlisted, we signed a contract with America—to defend this country, even at the cost of our lives. Today, that contract is being shredded and thrown back in the face of the veterans’ community. In uniform, we put our differences aside to serve something greater than ourselves. Now, we must come together once again—to defend our values, our benefits, our jobs, and our families.”
Veteran leaders and organizations—labor unions and allies are being asked to stand in solidarity. Organizers emphasize that the rally is nonpartisan and veteran-led, focused not on politics but on protecting jobs, rights, benefits, and the Constitution itself.
